TOM HOLLAND’S CAREER is going from strength to strength. Following his critically-acclaimed turn as Peter Parker in Marvel Studios’ take on the Spider-Man franchise, he’s currently preparing to reprise the role in a fourth solo film, as well as the ensemble blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday. He’s also been cast opposite his girlfriend Zendaya in an upcoming Christopher Nolan movie, which will surely send his star to even greater heights. But his acting resume and high profile relationship are just the beginning. In his Men’s Health cover story, we learned there’s even more to Holland than we first imagined.
He’s an incredibly accomplished golfer.
In the extremely unlikely event that this whole acting thing doesn’t work out, Holland has a viable back-up career: pro golfer. He has a handicap of 2:9, and plays regularly with his brothers. In fact, they recently competed in a tournament with PGA player Tommy Fleetwood, and ended up winning.
“It was the best day of my life,” says Holland. “I called my lady and was like, ‘Listen, I’m thinking of turning pro.'”
He’s open about his sobriety.
Holland has transformed his relationship with alcohol over the past couple years. “Every Friday after work was a write-off,” he explains. “I didn’t have bad experiences, but I would drink enough so that I would ruin my next day.”
After realizing that he was relying on alcohol to help him navigate social situations, Holland decided to give it up for a month. What began as a short experiment turned into two months, then three, and Holland has now been sober for two years. He’s even launched his own line of alcohol-free beers, Bero.
He’s a carpenter. Yes, really.
We’ve all seen those superhero muscles and that famous backflip, but there’s also functional strength in there. Holland loves building furniture with his own hands, a trait he inherited from his beloved late grandfather, who passed away recently.
“He lived a fantastic life and was a great grandfather and taught me carpentry,” Holland tells Men’s Health. His most recent project was building some cupboards in the Los Angeles apartment he shares with Zendaya, and he is proud to say that “they’re still standing.”
He’s a devoted dog dad.
Holland has a special bond with Zendaya’s nine-year-old miniature schnauzer, Noon, to the extent that he named one of his new beers, “Noon Wheat,” after him. The couple just got another dog, a Doberman puppy called Daphne, whom Holland describes as being “so cute” that “it’s actually a joke.” Even if she does still “poo in [the] house.”
