Pros
  • LED light sensor to remind you to drink water
  • Connects with intuitive smartphone app
  • Keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours
  • Reminders to hydrate are subtle yet effective
Cons
  • Can’t be used for hot beverages
  • Hand wash only

The Hidrate Spark was one of the first smart connected water bottles on the market and these days the Spark Pro sets the standard for smart water bottles. Its list of smart features is vast: tracks your daily water intake, lights up to remind you to drink, sends you push notifications to remind you to hydrate (Dad jokes included), provides a free app but also integrates with most major health apps, and sets a customizable daily hydration goal based on your specific hydration needs.

The key to the Spark Pro is its ability to take all the different factors that impact how much water you need (age, gender, height, weight, activity level, wake up/go to sleep, local weather, and elevation) to determine a drinker’s daily consumption goal. Set up for all of that within the Hidrate tracking app is relatively simple. Once it’s input, along with continual tracking of your water intake, you’re given daily goals—reminders like the non-disruptive bottom of the bottle glowing or push notifications are the sticks to this bottle’s carrot. When you fill the bottle each time, it needs to be placed flat on a surface so the Bluetooth sensor in the bottom can register the weight properly.

“The bottle’s water tracking abilities are impressive,” our tester notes. “The tracking on the app is accurate [Hidrate claims 97% accuracy] and helps me keep an eye on what I’m drinking. When I was zoning out, working, or running around, the bottle lighting up or a silly push notification nudged me to take a second to hydrate. This led to me drinking more water than I typically do.

The Spark Pro comes in sizes from 17 to 32 ounces, and all are vacuum insulated (except the 24 oz that is Tritan plastic). This helps keep cold drinks cold, Hidrate claiming 24 hours worth. Hot drinks can only be used in the brand’s 20 oz cup version though. This stainless steel design also does well in durability, as a few drops throughout testing didn’t even produce a scratch or ding. Additionally, the battery life is significant—our tester did not need to charge (after initial unboxing) throughout, and Hidrate claims 10-14 days worth of battery.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for the highest-tech smart water bottle to help you create and stick to a hydration regimen, the value of the Hidrate Spark Pro is unbeatable.

Best Premium

LARQ PureVis 2

PureVis 2

Pros
  • Most complete set of features
  • Reminders are subtle
  • Versatile cap design for swigging or sipping
  • Filtration and purification in one bottle
Cons
  • Most expensive smart water bottle on our list
  • Battery life not as long as others on this list
  • Filters only last 40 gallons

LARQ’s PurVis was previously our best self-cleaning bottle, but the release of the PurVis 2 has seen significant feature additions that merit it as our premium pick.

The original PurVis utilized UV-C light technology to clean out bacteria that sticks around in between washes. Since the pandemic, UV-C light sanitizing systems have been on the rise because of how efficient they are. In water bottles it makes sense, because we all know how difficult it is to get every nook and cranny at the bottom of a water bottle.

The PurVis 2 builds on that and comes with integrated water consumption tracking and water filtration, a trifecta of smart features that’s unmatched. The UV-C LED works very similarly to the original PurVis—push the button on the cap for a 60-minute clean cycle to remove bacteria. The bottle will also run this cycle every 2 hours. A two-stage filtration straw (that is removable) deploys nano zero filtration to remove chlorine, PFOA/PFOS, and nearly-all bio-contaminants. Much like backcountry water filtration systems (in fact LARQ says the PurVis 2 can be used for that), it ensures clean drink water nearly anywhere you might find yourself.

Lastly, the consumption tracking works through the LARQ app where you can set up a hydration profile. When you’re behind the cap will flash white to remind you to hydrate. The battery works off a USB-C charge and can last up to 2-3 weeks. When you need to go all out and want a smart water bottle that can do anything, it’s the LARQ (though you’ll pay a premium price for it).

Best Budget Filter Bottle

LifeStraw Go Series Water Filter 1L

Go Series Water Filter 1L

Pros
  • Lightweight for those who like the Nalgene style better
  • Two-stage filtration is one of most-reliable out there
  • Handle is ergonomic and comfortable for carry
  • Affordable price for clean water anywhere
Cons
  • Not insulated so no hot drinks or keeping cold drinks cold
  • Pulling water through filter takes a little getting used to
  • Not for those who prefer chug caps or spouts
  • For use with filters, will require continual purchases over time

For those who don’t need bells and whistles but are looking for clean water wherever they go, a brand like LifeStraw has a solution in its Go Series. Long synonymous with backcountry water filtration, in recent years LifeStraw has produced water bottles that utilize the brand’s renowned water filtration technology—these are much more practical than leaning down and drinking water through the LifeStraw.

The Go Series comes in a few different options and capacities, but we tested the BPA-free 1L version. It’s lightweight, unlike the insulated versions on this list. But that also means you can’t use hot water in it and even with ice, it won’t keep drinks cold that long. If you do want those things, simply turn to one of the stainless steel versions.

Drinking water from the LifeStraw requires a tiny bit of pull on the straw. But once you get used to the force needed it’s not anything significant. While the two-stage filter removes nearly all bacteria, parasites, and microplastics, if you’re not concerned about the quality of the water you’re drinking, the Go bottle can be used without it. The membrane microfilter is good for 1,000 gallons of use and the activated carbon filter has a life of 26 gallons (or around 2 months). And there’s a stop-gap here as well: the filter will not allow water to pass through it when it needs to be replaced, easing any worries or need to keep tabs on how much water it’s filtered for you.

All-in-all, the Go bottle is a well-made, affordable BPA-free plastic option that’s easy to be on the go with that will get you clean, drinkable water anywhere you go.

Pros
  • Top-shelf battery life for UV-C sanitizing bottle
  • Handle is ergonomic and soft to carry
  • Can be used for hot and cold drinks
Cons
  • Only one capacity
  • No hydration tracking

A self-cleaning water bottle is only as good as the life of the battery. Which is why the Philips GoZero tops in that department, boasting a battery life of 30 days after magnetic USB charge. It utilizes the standard UV-C LED technology to automatically sanitize the bottle every 2 hours. This can also be done anytime you need it by pushing the button on the cap.

The double-vacuum insulation will keep hot drinks hot for 12 hours and cold drinks for 24 hours. In our testing, we enjoyed the sturdy carry handle on the cap allowing for easy clipping it to a bag or an ergonomic carry with a few fingers.

The design is sleek, and while 20 oz is on the lower-end of the spectrum for capacity on our list, the Philips GoZero still offers a great option that can also be used for hot drinks.

Smart Features UV-C sanitizing
Maintenance Battery lasts 30 days (rechargeable)

Best for Travel

Monos Kiyo UV-C Water Bottle

Kiyo UV-C Water Bottle

Pros
  • Eliminates 99.99% of bacteria
  • Battery lasts up to a month
  • Can be used for hot and cold drinks
  • Sleek, artisan-inspired good looks
Cons
  • Doesn’t track hydration levels

You might think that a great luggage brand like Monos might not have the chops to make a good, UV-C LED sanitizing water bottle. But remember, the brand knows travel. And one thing you need wherever you go is the ability to get clean water.

The Monos’ Kiyo UV-C Water Bottle sanitizes the bottle (and the water) just like the other UV-C smart bottles on our list. It can do a 60-second clean or a deep, 3-minute clean at the push of a button. That means you won’t have to worry about keeping it clean when you’re in a hotel for a week and don’t have access to a dishwasher or even the ability to hand wash it.

The soft design doesn’t look as high-tech as it is, taking inspiration from classic artisan pottery. A silicon base also ensures it won’t bang down on any surface and will keep it put. It charges via USB-C in just 3 hours for 30 days of normal use, which is seriously-good battery life. It’s a great portable option that fits in a purse, backpack, or carry-on travel bag while remaining easy to carry and impressive in style. You can’t track your hydration levels, so this is a great option for someone that isn’t always connected, but is always on the go.

Capacity 16.9, 25.3 oz
Smart Features UV-C sanitizing
Maintenance Battery lasts 30 days (rechargeable)
Material Double-wall vacuum insulated stainless steel
Dishwasher Safe? Yes (excluding the cap)

Best Glass Smart Water Bottle

Level Up Way Glass Hydrogen Generator Smart Water Bottle

Glass Hydrogen Generator Smart Water Bottle

Pros
  • Creates hydrogen water from any water in 6 minutes
  • Sleek, modern design
  • Durable borosilicate glass construction
  • Claims to remove ozone and other harmful gasses
Cons
  • Benefits to hydrogenated water not fully substantiated
  • Small capacity
  • Heavy for a water bottle

Wellness junkies are probably aware of the potential benefits to the hydrogen water hype. Essentially, hydrogen water is regular water with gas that may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some researchers claim it slows the process of aging, has better mineral absorption, and improves muscle recovery after a workout. While current research is limited, those aiming to stay on top of the latest health trends (and boast about it) will love the potential benefits of this hydrogen-forming smart water bottle.

The Level Up Way glass bottle lets you turn any water into hydrogen water through something called SPE (solid polymer electrolysis) PEM (proton exchange membrane) technology. At the press of a button, and a little patience (6 minutes to be exact), this smart bottle ionizes your water making it more bioavailable, introducing molecular hydrogen. Hydrogen water can be expensive, so this one-time purchase is worth your hard-earned money, if you can commit to it.

Capacity 11.8 oz
Smart Features Creates hydrogenated water
Maintenance Battery lasts 20 cycles
Material Borosilicate glass
Dishwasher Safe? Yes (not not the battery portion)

Best for Backcountry Use

Grayl 24 oz GeoPress Purifier

24 oz GeoPress Purifier

Pros
  • High-grade filtering capabilities
  • Requires no set-up
  • Simple and effective filtration process
  • Great use for anywhere in the outdoors
Cons
  • Can’t be used without filter
  • Requires a physical “press” by user to filter the water
  • Not dishwasher safe

The Grayl GeoPress is a super impressive water filtration system, starting with the fact that it doesn’t look or feel like a water filtration system at all. It carries and feels like any other water bottle, but the GeoPress has the ability to make any nearby water source drinkable. Of course, if you don’t need to filter water on a regular basis, you can simply use it as a standard water bottle, and not worry about changing the filters (which can be expensive).

But this is the perfect hydration companion for anyone looking to hit a long trail run, bike through the hills, or even backcountry camp. In order to fully test its capabilities, our tester threw the GeoPress on his Ride1Up 700 Series and went for a long Sunday ride. “I worked up quite a thirst after about an hour of hills, and filled the GeoPress up in the nearby creek. Once you separate the outer shell, fill it up with water, and push the body of the bottle down into the pool of water you’ve captured—unscrewing the cap a small amount helps allow air through and makes the filtering process easier.”

While filtering a full bottle takes a small amount of effort (around 8 seconds of a push), but it’s a simple and effective process. Utilizing electro-adsorption and activated carbon filtration, what remains is safely purified water, removed of metals, bacteria, and other contaminants. Our tester was confident drinking the water, which made the ride back all the easier.

For those looking for a water bottle that does more, especially those outdoor enthusiasts, this Grayl is a great pick.

Capactiy 24 oz
Smart Features Two-stage filtration
Maintenance Filter lasts 350 cycles
Material BPA-free plastic
Dishwasher Safe? No, hand wash all components only

Best Non-Tech Smart Water Bottle

Giotto 32 oz Large Water Bottle

32 oz Large Water Bottle

Pros
  • Provides an analog way to track hydration
  • Lots of color options
  • Affordable
  • Doesn’t require any setup or apps

Unlike the other smart water bottles here, this water bottle has zero tech features. But it’s “smart” in how it motivates you to drink up throughout the day. You might laugh or think it’s cheesy, but these little reminders can actually work by training your brain to look forward to these tiny milestones. Let’s be honest: If you’re staring at a plain cup, you are much less likely to take a sip and refill than you are to hit the goals listed on this jug. If a $20 water jug can up your hydration levels, take that as a major win.

A few other features to like about this “dumb” water bottle are the 32-ounce capacity and leakproof, BPA-free design. At under $30, it’s also one of the most affordable water bottles we researched this year. Plus, it’s hard to ignore the more than 51,000 ratings on Amazon alone, including more than 42,000 five-star ratings. It might be a little basic, but thousands of buyers agree that it’s helping them stay hydrated.

Maintenance None
Material BPA-free plastic
Dishwasher Safe? Yes (except for lid and straw)

Best with Speaker and Charger

Litflask Smart Water Bottle with Bluetooth Speaker and Charger

Smart Water Bottle with Bluetooth Speaker and Charger

Pros
  • Double-wall insulation keeps cold for up to 24 hours
  • Speaker is detachable and can be used separately
  • Versatility of 3-in-1 device
  • Can be used with hot drinks as well
Cons
  • Not waterproof or water resistant
  • Requires frequent charging if using daily
  • Not dishwasher safe

And you thought you’d seen it all. This isn’t your typical “smart water bottle,” in the sense that it’ll encourage you to drink more. But you will at least have more fun staying hydrated. That’s because this high-tech water bottle features a detachable Bluetooth speaker—which means it’s perfect for anyone who likes to keep their tunes with them wherever they go. Take it with you on a hike, an outdoor workout, on the beach, or anywhere else (where bumping those jams out loud is acceptable, of course).

There’s more to this than just the speaker though: it has a built-in USB-C 5000 mAh charger, the ability to connect to other bottles for surround sound, a built-in microphone for calls, and interactive LED light modes.

For a double-wall insulated bottle that also sports a Bluetooth speaker and a portable charger, each of those three separate items would cost over $100 combined. But in the Litflask, they all come in a package that’s just under that price. While the longevity and durability might not be that of others on this list, you can’t argue with the value of one product that can do all that.

Capacity 20 oz
Smart Features Bluetooth speaker, portable charger
Maintenance Battery lasts around 8 hours (depending on use)
Material Double-wall v
