IF YOU’RE LOOKING for an indication of how things in James Gunn’s new DC Universe are going to go, Creature Commandos certainly got things off to a damn good start. The animated show’s first season has concluded, and all it took was seven episodes, all ranging in the range of 22-28 minutes long, to introduce an engaging story, layered and interesting characters, incredibly impressive emotional beats, and the seeds of what should eventually become a super fun and lived-in superhero universe. In short? Gunn did what Gunn does.
The writer/director/producer and co-CEO of DC Studios has had nothing but hits during his time making movies and television in the superhero space; his previous endeavors include all three Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel Studios to go along with The Suicide Squad and its TV spinoff Peacemaker for (the previous regime of) DC. And while Creature Commandos features many of the hallmarks of those previous projects—a team of dysfunctional misfits, quick-witted humor, and a far bigger heart and emotional center than you would initially imagine—it does a great job of kicking the ambitious project of re-creating an iconic superhero universe off with relatively low stakes.
Season 1 of Commandos introduced us to a number of characters, including Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), The Bride (Indira Varma), Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), and Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), among others; these super-powered misfits were always more than they seemed on the surface, with stories that went in directions you didn’t particularly expect. Some characters weren’t the villains you took them to be, while characters like Dr. Phosphorous (Alan Tudyk) embraced their inner chaos after tragedy befalls them.
Overall, it was a super fun show in the ever-growing superhero genre, and one we’re eager to see more of. But while season 2 has been ordered, there may be more to this story and these characters too. Let’s get into it.
Will Creature Commandos get a season 2?
Yes, there will be a season 2 of Creature Commandos!
The end of season 1 shows that while Rick Flag Sr. seems to be doing something else, and Nina unfortunately was killed by the Princess, The Bride will be leading a new iteration of the team that includes new team members Nosferata, Khalis, a rebuilt G.I. Robot, and King Shark, to go along with Dr. Phosphorous and Weasel.
The show’s second season was officially confirmed back in December 2023, according to Variety. “Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them,” HBO and Max executive Amy Gravitt said . “We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”
Gunn also confirmed the news on his own Twitter account. “You wanted monsters? Well, you’re getting even more,” he wrote, accompanied by a holiday season-themed image of the character Weasel. “We’re coming back for season two!”
When will Creature Commandos season 2 come out?
We don’t know for sure when Creature Commandos season 2 will come out, but we can feel confident that it won’t be quite as long as a break between seasons of Gunn’s other DC show, Peacemaker. The second season of Peacemaker is expected to debut in 2025 after the first season debuted in early 2022, but that delay is due to lots of change at DC (including Gunn’s own ascension) and other things.
Granted, Gunn and DC are building their own cohesive universe and running story, so there’s a chance that Creature Commandos takes a bit of time to return for season 2 just for narrative purposes; maybe things just need to happen in Peacemaker, Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, or any of the studio’s other upcoming projects first.
Will we see characters from Creature Commandos again or elsewhere in the DC Universe?
Yes! We know for certain that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. will appear in live-action in both Superman and Peacemaker season 2.
None of the other Commandos cast have been confirmed for live-action roles, but Gunn has said in the past that it was his intention for the same actors to portray these characters in both animation and live-action, so anyone involved should be on the table for the future.
