THE CHARACTERS OF DC Comics have taken many on-screen forms through the years, on both the big screen and the small, and getting the most iconic characters in that world right has long been a high priority for Warner Bros. After a decade-plus of chasing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s successes to mixed results, DC has finally hit the big red REBOOT button and put James Gunn—best known for his Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, but who also had a rare DCEU success with The Suicide Squad—in charge. And after a few years of planning, his first project, and the first glimpse at his new universe, has finally arrived.
Enter Creature Commandos. Based on the DC Comics team of the same name, Creature Commandos is a team of misfits not unlike what Gunn has previously adapted with both Guardians and Suicide Squad; this time, the team is made up of supernatural beings with star-studded voices, like Frankenstein (voiced by David Harbour), The Bride (voiced by Indira Varma), and Doctor Phosphorus (voiced by Alan Tudyk). The team is led by Rick Flag Sr. (voiced by Frank Grillo and father of the Rick Flag previously played by Joel Kinnaman) while the morally gray Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) looms.
It’s a super fun series that hits all the fun beats we’ve grown to know and love from a Gunn-made superhero project: lots of humor, many surprises, and a deceptively warm heart at its center, rooted in the idea of a found family. Creature Commandos is the first project in Gunn’s new DCU, which will next premiere Superman (starring David Corenswet) next summer and Peacemaker season 2 not long after that. The idea with Commandos is that the actors in this animated production will also play the same characters in live action when the time comes; Grillo will be doing just that in both Superman and Peacemaker.
And that’s all you really need to know! Creature Commandos is a blast of a show and one hell of a way to kick off a new take on the DC Universe; you know you’re getting the big guns in Superman next year, so it makes sense to kick things off with a lower-stakes property like Creature Commandos. And this is one superhero trip worth taking.
