THE NEW LIMITED series Shōgun is a big-budget, epic saga based on a widely respected work of historical fiction: in other words, the ultimate exercise in prestige television.

Set in the early 16srcsrcs, Shōgun follows shipwrecked English navigator John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) after he washes up on the shores of feudal Japan at a time when the country was still shrouded in mystery, with only the Portuguese trading with Japan and doing their utmost to maintain their monopoly.

Blackthorne, dubbed “Anjin,” is the fish-out-of-water surrogate through whom the audience learns about the workings of 17th century Osaka, but the story also focuses on Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), who uses the foreigner’s presence to sow discord among his rival daimyo regents, and the mysterious female samurai Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai) as their paths cross and their fates become entangled in a bloody struggle for power.

Adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel, Shōgun is has received rave reviews for its opening episodes, with a number of critics comparing it favorably to the early seasons of Game of Thrones, particularly in the skilful way it introduces a sprawling cast of characters and deftly explains the political milieu of its feudal setting—not to mention its high production values and brutal depictions of violence.

Now, Shōgun is nominated for 25 Emmys, already winning many of those. If you’re wondering how to watch, we’ve got you covered.
