EVER SINCE ANYONE But You was released last year and became a surprise hit at the box office, we’ve been talking more and more about the return, rise, and renaissance of the romantic comedy. There have been movies like Lisa Frankenstein (which leaned more horror), The Fall Guy (which leaned action), and Challengers (which leaned, well, horny), all of which kept the vibe going in one way or another. But nothing has captured the classic rom-com mood that fans of the genre know and really, really, love like Netflix’s new series Nobody Wants This.
The premise of Nobody Wants This sounds like the start of a mediocre joke: a sex podcaster and a rabbi start a relationship. But beyond that silly logline, there’s so much to the show; stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are endlessly charming and have so much chemistry and charisma, and their respective sidekicks, played by Justine Lupe and Timothy Simons are essentially the perfect rom-com sidekicks. They’re alle so much fun to watch, and so funny, and so engaging whenever they’re on screen.
Nobody Wants This goes through the typical rom-com arc during the 10 episodes of its first season: the leads get together, there are some road bumps, and then there’s a big, happy ending. But there’s also a major question at the end: how will Rabbi Noah (Brody) and podcaster Joanne (Bell) make it work? She’s not sure she wants to convert to Judaism. Does that mean he’s giving up his big job? Or is there some other way forward?
Until we get a season 2 of Nobody Wants This, the answer to that question is going to have to live in our heads. But, luckily, there’s hope.
Will Nobody Wants This get a season 2?
We don’t have any word on Nobody Wants This season 2 just yet, but the early signs for more are good. The show quickly reached #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 shows, and, based on the reaction from viewers on social media and critics (it has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes), it is very, very loved.
The people behind the show have a major desire for the story to continue. “I would love to do a season 2; Kristen and Adam would love to do a Season 2,” the show’s creator and showrunner Erin Foster told The Wrap in an interview. “There’s so much more story to tell so if people like the show, then I would be really excited to keep telling it.”
In a separate interview with IndieWire, Foster mentioned that there’s already been talk about where the show’s story could go from here. “I think the conversations have definitely started to happen about a potential season 2,” she said. “The story in Season 1 unfolds really slowly. And so I think if there is a Season 2 I would want to just kind of pick up where we leave off and continue to take it slow, because I don’t want us to get too far ahead of ourselves.”
As a viewer—and a big fan—of how the show went about itself in season 2, I think it’s safe to say that as long as we get confirmation that Nobody Wants Some will return, one way or another, it’s going to be an entertaining, funny, and fulfilling ride.
