IT SEEMS LIKE just about everything is becoming a multi-platform franchise these days, so why not one rooted in some of the best blockbuster films of the 2020s? Dune: Prophecy arrives on HBO without the involvement of Academy Award-nominated director Denis Villenueve, but with a connection to his films Dune and Dune: Part Two—a story set 10,000 years before the conflict between the Atreides and Harkonnen houses on Arrakis.
Based on the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune (co-written by original Dune author Frank Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson), Dune: Prophecy goes back to the very beginning of this story, telling a tale of warring among houses on Arrakis and the very start of the powerful pseudo-witches known as the Bene Gesserit.
With an impressive cast that includes Emily Watson and Olivia Williams as the Harkonnen sisters who start the powerful sect, along with Mark Strong as the Emperor of the moment and Travis Fimmel as a soldier with a secretive plan, Dune: Prophecy feels like the House of the Dragon to Dune‘s Game of Thrones.
Dune: Prophecy went through some serious production turmoil on its way to the big screen, but now that it’s arriving, it seems like it was worth it; the show is well-made, well-acted, and looks really good. It’s only six episodes long, but that’s OK—keep in mind that even as lengthy films, both Dune movies only equal about 5 hours combined. Six episodes is plenty of time to tell a good Dune story (and should be a great tide-me-over as we wait for Villeneuve to reunite with Timothée Chalamet and company for Dune: Messiah).
So, without further ado, below we have all the information to make sure you don’t miss a single episode.
