JUST LIKE THAT, House of the Dragon‘s second season has come to a conclusion. While the two-year wait between the show’s first and second season felt like an eternity, it came back and viewers were dropped right into the world of Westeros, fully immersed in the Dance of the Dragons like they were never gone. And while it’s going to be a tough wait to see what happens next, we’re going to be left thinking about the events of the finale for a long, long time.

But what comes next? Based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood—which itself is a sort of history book of Westeros, told by semi-unreliable narrators—House of the Dragon will continue to tell the story of the famed Targaryen civil war fought between the two factions known as the Blacks and the Greens. And while we did get eight episodes of seeing what happens between the sides led by Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith) compared to the side led by Alicent (Olivia Cooke), Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), and Aemond (Ewen Mitchell), we still can’t wait to see what happens next.

One thing we do know with certainty, though? That the House of the Dragon story will continue. No cliffhangers here—we will see this story out. It’s been a huge hit for HBO, and fans are of course along for the ride.

Here’s what we know about House of the Dragon season 3 so far.

There’s good news: House of the Dragon will continue. HBO officially ordered season 3 on June 13, just before the show’s second season debuted on June 16.

HBO programming executive Francesca Orsi praised co-creators Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin, along with the rest of the show’s cast and crew, in a statement that was released alongside news of the show’s renewal.

“George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season,” she said. “We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season 2, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season 3.”

We can expect the story of The Dance of the Dragons to continue—and for all of the key surviving characters (and their corresponding cast members) to return, in addition to new characters to be cast, like Daeron Targaryen, who was referenced throughout season 2.

There’s good news and bad news. The good news? House of the Dragon most likely should come back sooner than the nearly two-year period between the premiere of season 1 and the premiere of season 2. After all, this time there likely won’t be a WGA or SAG-AFTRA strike to affect production (though the latter hardly affected HotD, as most of these performers are part of a different union). That being said, House of the Dragon is an expensive show that looks as good as it does because the people behind the scenes take their time. We’re likely looking at a 2026 release date, but maybe they can have the show ready in time for early spring rather than summer or fall.

That being said, House of the Dragon isn’t the only glimpse into the Game of Thrones world any more. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, is expected to release its six-episode first season in 2025.

And if you want the full story, you can always go direct to the source—Fire & Blood is available to read whenever you so choose.
