WHICH PART OF this is harder to believe: That 2018 was already seven years ago, or that it’s been seven years since Marvel fans got a proper Daredevil project, back then in the form of the show’s third season on Netflix? Both are wild, particularly the latter—because Daredevil/Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Kingpin/Wilson Fisk (Vincen D’Onofrio) are both so perfect in their respective roles that even though now they’re finally making their way back, it also kind of feels like they were never gone.
Daredevil: Born Again isn’t totally a sequel to the three seasons (and connected series) that were a part of the Netflix-produced show; Marvel Studios is now running things, and has been somewhat cagey about just how much of the original show is going to carry over. To be safe, we’re choosing to think of it as a soft reboot; many of the actors are the same, many of the things we’ve seen in the past probably did happen, but this could also be a pretty OK place for anyone to jump on board and not need too much explaining. In short? You can think about Daredevil: Born Again the same way you’d think about a new writer taking over for a run on a beloved superhero character’s comic.
Marvel Studios has done a good job of helping to bridge the gap between Daredevil shows, however. Much in the same way that the Netflix-produced Daredevil series took a sloooow burn approach, only showing Daredevil in his well-known red costume in the first season finale, the MCU has done a slow reveal of Daredevil and Kingpin. In fact, we’ve seen both of them already (Daredevil/Matt in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo, Kingpin in Hawkeye and Echo) but never even close to a scene together. The MCU smartly decided to save those fireworks for the main event.
And Daredevil: Born Again should be just that. While there have been some behind-the-scenes troubles on the way here, it seems like the correct decision was made for this show to focus on re-building what people really liked about the original: the characters, the dark, gritty vibes, and the action. Some new characters will be introduced (like a serial killer named Muse and Daniel Blake, a new apprentice character for Kingpin played by Michael Gandolfini) and other old favorites will return (like Jon Bernthal‘s Punisher and Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye). Oh, and if the Echo credits scene tease is any indication, it seems like things will be following the Devil’s Reign comics run, and making Kingpin the Mayor of New York City. Sounds like a good recipe to us.
