“BLOCK OUT ALL the noise.”

That’s what Bronny James, the heir to an unmatched basketball legacy, says is the best advice he’s ever been given. Putting that counsel into practice is easier said than done, however, as the 2src-year-old Lakers rookie shares in his wide-ranging Men’s Health cover interview.

So where can he find refuge away from the bright lights of the court, sky-high expectations, and social media-fueled news cycles? In the gym. The former USC Trojan invited the MH crew to take a look at some of the exercises he’s been using to build up his NBA body as he continues to recover from a serious health scare last year that delayed his sole collegiate season.

Bronny says he’s been lifting weights since he was 13 years old, following in the footsteps of a father who’s seen as one of the hardest-working athletes in sports (LeBron is said to spend over $1 million per year on his physical regimen to keep his body in top condition). Bronny might not play into his 4srcs, as it seems inevitable that his father will, but the younger James is already taking on some of these practices to set himself up for success.

Bronny also believes there’s one aspect of his game in which he has an edge: “I can definitely one-up my dad with my shooting ability,” he says. To become a lights-out shooter in the NBA, Bronny will have to put in work—and it seems like he’s already establishing the right framework. He’ll have to put his head down and hone his skills, on the court and in the weight room. And while he might be aiming to eclipse his famous father in some parts of his game, Bronny is lucky enough to have some valuable lessons to build on. Who do you think told him to “block out all the noise,” to begin with?

“My father gave me that advice,” he says.
