While the present-day adventures of the Dutton family have come to a hold (for now; The Madison with Michelle Pfeiffer is coming soon, and we’re still waiting for more info on a Rip & Beth series), super-producer Taylor Sheridan has been working on building the lore and world of this universe outwards for a number of years, first with 1883, and then with 1923, which will continue with its second season after two years away.

These shows are explained simply enough: the title of the show represents the year where we find past generations of the Dutton family, and what we see play out on screen is a pivotal piece of getting the family to where they are when we meet them in Yellowstone. John Dutton (Kevin Costner), his kids, and everything around them isn’t the same if these events don’t play out in the exact fashion we see them. If you’re a Yellowstone fan, these prequel shows are, essentially, the Dutton bible.

One thing 1923 also has going for it is the brilliant casting that Sheridan now is able to employ on every show he puts together. Seriously: the man has drawn Zoe Saldaña, Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, Sylvester Stallone, Jeremy Renner, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman to his shows in recent years. 1923 is no different, counting the legendary Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as its leads with rising star Brandon Skelnar (who will also appear in the thriller Drop this spring) among the other main cast. It’s event television for those invested in the Yellowstone/Sheridan/Paramount+-iverse.
